As a support specialist, I wanted to address the frequently asked questions surrounding what a support specialist is. This post aims to shed light on the transformative power of shared experiences.
What Is Peer Support?
Peer support is a community-based and person-centered recovery service for those struggling with mental health issues and/or substance use. It applies the shared experiences of trained specialists to promote recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, well-being and independence. Peer workers or support specialists offer peer support services usually within a health program. A support specialist is a person who has personal experience in recovery from a behavioral or mental health condition who works for pay or as a volunteer. Core competencies are foundational and essential capabilities required by anyone providing peer support services. Core competencies for support specialists are skills and attributes that enable them to effectively support people on their recovery journey. These competencies guide service delivery, inform training programs, and promote best practices.
As a support specialist, I engage people in collaborative and caring relationships by building trust and rapport. Demonstrating empathy and active listening is also important for providing emotional support and encouragement. The ability to assist with resources and referrals for housing, and employment as well as other practical needs. Sharing lived experiences of recovery helps to inspire hope and normalize challenges because we all go through them. I provide individualized services to support each person’s unique needs because I've been trained to recognize diversity and cultural differences. Recovery planning to collaborate on goals and action steps encourages self-determination. Peer specialists also help navigate an intimidating system by providing information about health, wellness, and coping techniques. Education on self-care, and healthy lifestyle choices, as well as helping clients manage crises by providing vital support during challenging moments. It’s also imperative for specialists to know when and how to seek professional help when challenges are out of their scope of care.
Peer support is about fostering connections, empathy, and understanding among those who have walked similar paths. It’s a powerful force for healing and personal growth.
