Understanding Emotional Blockages & How to Release Them

They can affect our mental and physical health, our relationships, and even our ability to create our lives how we desire to. Let’s explore what emotional blockages are, how they show up and most importantly, how to release them so you can step into a more aligned and empowered version of yourself.
What Are Emotional Blockages?
Emotional blockages are unprocessed emotions that become trapped in the body and the mind. These can stem from past experiences, childhood conditioning and inherited patterns. When emotions are not dealt with fully, they create energetic stagnation, leading to feelings of frustration, anxiety, sadness, or even physical discomfort.
Signs You Have Emotional Blocks
Emotional blockages can show up in different ways, including:
Feeling stuck in repetitive patterns or cycles
Difficulty expressing emotions or communicating needs
Unexplained anxiety, stress, or overwhelm
Procrastination or self-sabotage when pursuing goals
Physical tension, chronic pain, or digestive issues
Feeling disconnected from yourself and/or others

How to Release Emotional Blockages
Acknowledge & Identify the Block
The first step to healing is always awareness. Take time to notice where in your life you feel resistance. Journaling can be a powerful tool. Ask yourself:
Where do I feel stuck? What emotions am I avoiding? Are there any patterns in my life that keep repeating?
Bringing awareness to your patterns helps to uncover what’s beneath the surface.
Move the Energy Through Your Body
Emotions are energy in motion. When they’re suppressed and pushed down, they become stagnant. Releasing them often requires physical movement:
Breathwork: Deep, intentional breathing helps let go of trapped emotions. Try belly breathing or alternate nostril breathing.
Stretching or Walking: Gentle movement helps energy flow through the body. Walking is my go-to!
Shaking or Dancing: Physically shaking off tension (like animals do!) helps release stored stress.
Use Sound & Vibrational Healing
Sound frequencies, such as tuning forks, singing bowls, or even humming can help break up emotional stagnation. Ever wonder why certain songs make you cry? The mix of elements and rhythm in a melody can evoke specific emotions, often amplified by lyrics that may resonate with our personal stories or feelings.
Practice Emotional Release Techniques
Crying: If you feel emotions rising, allow yourself to cry without judgment. It’s a natural release and tears can lower cortisol, the stress hormone.
Screaming or Vocalizing: Expressing emotions through sound (even through deep sighs) can be incredibly freeing.
Journaling: Write out your emotions freely with no filter and no structure. Just let them out.
Connect With Your Inner Child
Many emotional blocks stem from childhood wounds. Practices like visualization, affirmations, and self-soothing techniques can help heal these deeper layers.
